Is depression more common in females?

I have so many girlfriends who say they have depression but then I don't know a single men who suffers from it. Do you have a similar impression?

Actually, women are nearly twice as likely as men to have depression linked to hormonal changes but also life circumstances etc. Then I also wonder if men might not admit to themselves they are depressed and just dont go to the doctor to be diagnosed. I wonder if that could also be a reason why the number for diagnosed women is so much higher.

It's more common for women to have depression because it lasts statically longer and comes back easily compared with men. Also, because of our hormones during menstruation, many of us suffer from PMDD - premenstrual dysphoric disorder - which is very common for women with anxiety and depression. It means the woman suffers from mood swings and cramps a week or so before her period. After it comes, she feels much better. I hope it was informative :)
